Have you ever got to a point in your life where you feel stuck, like something needs to change? Where you’ve been stumbling down the same path for a long time, pushing and working hard, yet nothing seems to be getting better?

Before you know it, what you thought you wanted leaves your life. This can often happen with your work or career. It can seem scary, especially if it’s something you’ve set your heart on, or something you’ve worked hard for. But believe me when I say, when things leave your life, it’s because something better is waiting in the wings to replace them.

What’s often needed when it comes to living the life you want is taking a step out of your comfort zone. This can often look like:

  • Leaving a stable job and income to go it alone;
  • Daring to break from the crowd and doing something you believe in;
  • Letting go of things that just aren’t working, even if it’s painful or scary to do so.

This involves making some brave and tough decisions, and plenty of people will have something to say about it. But at the end of the day, if you know you’re being true to yourself, that’s all you need to know.

You’ve probably heard it said that the magic happens outside of your comfort zone, and it really does. It’s not easy leaving what you’re comfortable with, but the thing is, you won’t grow if you don’t.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone can mean the difference between living your dream life and a life where you’re left wondering ‘what if?’ But how do you leave the fear behind?

Why you should step out of your comfort zone

You’ll find it easier to adapt to challenges and changes

If the past year and a bit has taught us anything it’s that life can often throw us a complete curveball when we are happily bobbing along. If you step out of your comfort zone regularly, you’ll find that you won’t be so thrown when challenges and changes do happen.

You’ll have more confidence in yourself

Have you ever done something that’s scared you to death but made you feel so good afterwards? You feel good because doing something you thought you couldn’t makes you feel more confident in yourself.

Your life will feel so much richer

Trying new things and breaking out of your comfort zone helps you experience new things and learn a lot about yourself. We all impose boundaries and restrictions on ourselves which keep us small. Pushing beyond them helps us feel free and makes our lives so much richer.

How to step out of your comfort zone

Write down a list of things you want to do

Whether it’s starting your own beauty business or training in a new treatment, write a list of things you want to do. Then break each thing down into small steps-how can you make them happen?

Do the thing you’ve been putting off

This is the scary bit; it might be handing in your notice and actually telling people you’re going to be starting your own business. It could be that you want to take your beauty business down a completely different path, but you aren’t sure how clients are going to react. Do that thing that’s been buzzing around in your head for a while now. I guarantee you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted once you’ve actually made a decision.

Get some inspiration

When you feel scared or stuck, a great way to feel less fearful is to read some inspirational books or blogs, or listen to some podcasts by people who have stepped out of their comfort zone. If you want to start your own business, read something by an amazing female entrepreneur. If you want to feel inspired, read or listen to something by someone who has succeeded against the odds.

It all starts with one tiny step outside your comfort zone. I promise you won’t regret it.

Which Beauty Course Should I Invest in?

Pick something you’re passionate about

Do you care about your clients’ wellbeing and want to help them relax? It might be a good idea to go down the holistic treatments route when you’re thinking about which beauty course you should invest in. Look for a course that matches your passion with your values.

Think about how you want to train

When you’re deciding on which beauty course you want to do and which provider to choose, is flexibility important to you? Do you need training that fits around your family and other commitments? Here at the Academy, we always aim to be flexible with training days and dates because we know that people have such busy lives.

Look at other beauty businesses in your area

If there are a lot of nail technicians in your local area, it makes sense that you might want to avoid specialising in nails. Look at what your actual/potential competitors are doing-what beauty course could you invest in that would set you apart?

Think about a course that trains you in multiple treatments

Consider going mobile

Some clients will be itching to get back in the salon, but some will be fearful, even with Covid-safe measures in place. Think about going back to basics

One thing about the lockdown was that clients went back to basics; they started looking after their skin because they were wearing less makeup and rather than rely on nail extensions, they started looking after their nails at home. That’s not to say they won’t ever want extensions again, but it wouldn’t hurt to go back to basics with the course you train in and the treatments you offer. Think offering facial treatments and teaching clients how to look after their skin, and offering gel polish or manicures with products that promote healthy strong natural nail growth.

Why You Should Do a Job You Love

‘Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’ is what they say.

But how many people actually do a job they love? Probably not many.

I’m not saying that there’s something wrong with doing a job just because it puts food on the table, but if you spend your life dreading Mondays, watching the clock, and struggling to get going every day, you have to ask yourself about the real cost of not doing a job that you really enjoy.

Here’s why you should do a job you love.

You’ll feel satisfied and fulfilled

Even when you do a job you love, you can be exhausted at the end of the day, but you’ll be tired in a good way. You’ll have enjoyed what you were doing and you’ll have made a difference to someone. This is far better than watching the clock all day and counting the hours until you can go home.

You’ll be a happier person

Think about it this way, most people spend around half of their waking hours at work. If you spend this time doing something you hate, you can’t expect to feel happy. If you do a job you love, you’ll find that there’s just so much more meaning and purpose to life, and you’ll be happier knowing that you’re doing what you were always meant to do.

You’ll be motivated to keep on doing better

If you don’t care about your job, you won’t be motivated to do well. You’ll probably just do the minimum you can get away with, then go home, because you’ll get your pay cheque anyway, right?

If you love your job, you’ll feel a lot different. You’ll want to always push yourself, get more qualified, and do better.

You’ll find even the tough days easier to handle

There are ups and downs in any job, and even if you love what you do, there’ll still be days where things happen to challenge or annoy you. If you love your job, these storms are a lot easier to weather though than if you’re facing issues while you’re in a job you hate.

So what should you do if you don’t love your work?

My advice would be to take a step towards doing something you love, no matter how small. Anything you do will be better than just wishing that things were different.

Do you want to change careers completely?

Or what about being your own boss?

A career in beauty therapy can be very rewarding, and you can use your skills in many different settings from salons to cruise ships, or you can go mobile for ultimate flexibility with your working hours.

How To Feel Less Stressed On The Run Up To Christmas

Christmas can be a lovely time of year but it can also be a stressful one at the best of times. It’s the busiest time by far for the beauty industry, and none of us need reminding that Christmas 2020 is probably going to look very different.

So how can you bring some balance in to your life, and reduce stress at home and at work at this Christmas?

Keep an eye on your stress levels day by day

A bit of short-term stress is not too harmful to health, but when it drags on and we don’t do anything to try and remedy it, it has a negative impact on our wellbeing.

If you’re feeling particularly stressed one day, do something that will help you feel balanced, like going for a walk or popping on a face mask and pampering yourself.

Make plans

Most of us always feel like we have too much to do and not enough time to do it in which can make our stress levels go through the roof. Write a to-do list for work and for home, try to prioritise what’s really important, and get other people to chip in and take some of the weight off too.

Take a break

Us therapists can often miss out on breaks when we have a packed diary, but it’s at the extra busy times that you really do need to take them to give your mind and body a rest, even if it’s for 10 minutes.

You might feel like you shouldn’t be taking breaks when you’re so busy, but not taking them can affect your energy and focus, and you won’t be able to give your clients your best.

Make the best of how things are

We’ve had to do this more than ever this year in the face of constantly changing restrictions, and Christmas is no exception. Don’t put pressure on yourself to try and make everything ‘perfect,’ just resolve to make the best of whatever happens. Be in the moment and make lots of nice new memories.

Try to eat well

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of indulgence at this time of year, but you won’t feel great if you’re existing for a month on alcohol, caffeine, and tins of celebrations! Try to eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water, and stick to regular mealtimes.

Know that it’s okay to say no

Whether that’s squeezing in more clients or taking on extra jobs at home, know that it’s okay to say no if you’re overwhelmed. With the pandemic this year, there has been a lot of online quizzes and other online social events going on, which is lovely, but the lack of face to face interaction can be quite draining. If you really can’t fit anything else into your already packed schedule and you feel exhausted, just say no.

Take some time out for yourself

I’m big on this because I know how important it is, especially at such a busy time of year for us therapists. To be at your best and to be able to fully enjoy life, as well as your time at work and at home, you need to look after yourself before you do anything else.

Quick ideas for self-care/chill time: read a book or magazine, listen to some music, watch a favourite film or TV show, do some yoga, have a nap, have a bath- just be.

Remember what’s really important

It’s all too easy to lose sight of what’s really important, but this year, we need to focus on that more than ever. Even if it feels like you haven’t got a lot to be grateful for this year, I bet if you think about it, you have. Time with loved ones, making moments and memories. Staying cosy on a cold day. Being thankful that you’re here to celebrate Christmas, whatever that looks like for you.

Why You Should Always Be Authentic

Staying true and authentic to who you really are is one of the most important things in life, and you should try to do this in business too.

In a time when we are all feeling a bit disconnected, people want something genuine, and they’ll come to you for treatments and a really nice experience if you are honest, real, and can offer them a genuine sense of connection.

What does being authentic mean?

When you’re authentic, you stay true to who you are and your values are reflected in everything you do. This doesn’t just make for a much happier and more fulfilling life, it also really benefits your business because:

  • It helps you stand out from the competition
  • Customers will relate to you better
  • People will see you and your business as reliable and trustworthy

How can you be authentic?

Be real.  

This is really important. Think about why you started your business and find the best way to share your passion and your mission with customers. You don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not or spend all of your time copying what your competitors are doing. This is YOUR business and you have to build it according to your values. What is important to you?

For me, a lot of my training at the academy is done one to one or in very small groups, and that’s how I like it. It’s never been about getting bums on seats for me; I want to see my students do well and thrive.

Another thing that’s really important to me is only bringing in new training and treatments if I believe in them 100% myself. If I didn’t believe that they worked or were of any benefit, why would I expect my students and clients to believe in them?

Finally, I am always transparent with my prices and I don’t slash prices ridiculously just to get people in the door. I know that it’s tempting with the way things are now, but be realistic about exactly what you’re offering people and what you’re worth. If you are offering your services for far less than what you know you’re worth, you won’t be as motivated to do a good job and you won’t attract customers who’ll value you, your services, or your experience. I’m not saying don’t offer people incentives, just don’t stray too far from what you know you’re worth in your own heart.

Being authentic pays off

Being authentic and not just doing as others do has really paid off for me. I still love what I do after more than 20 years in the industry, and I’ve recently won the ‘Best Beauty Therapist Education Enterprise -North East.’ This is the second award I’ve won in recent years and it shows that people value my honest and authentic teaching style and the way I do business.

Being authentic could pay off for you too. Think about it; rather than wasting all of your energy on creating and maintaining an impression of yourself and your business that isn’t real for all the world to see, you can focus on building a business that you genuinely love that aligns with your deepest values. That will attract more customers that value you, any day of the week.

Why Beauty Therapy is About More Than Making People Look Good

At a time when many people’s mental health and wellbeing is suffering, there’s more of a need than ever to do what we can as beauty therapists to help people look and feel good.

The salon gives people the chance to open up and chat

The salon is a relaxed environment for people to come and get their treatments, as well as being a place where clients tend to feel comfortable about opening up. After months of being locked down and unable to see many other people, therapists provide that essential opportunity for interaction as well as the chance to chat.

A recent study found that 6% of people in the UK tell their hairdresser or beauty therapist more personal things than they tell their friends and family-I think that says it all about how much of a need there is for people like us.

Beauty treatments have a positive impact on wellbeing

Treatments like massage and reflexology have been proven to be beneficial for people suffering from the effects of stress as well as anxiety, depression, and much more.

Not only that, having your nails, eyebrows, and lashes done makes you look and feel good, and it can really lift your mood. Think about how we all felt during lockdown when we couldn’t have them.

Treatments are not about indulgence or vanity, they are essential self-care, and we all need to make time for that.

Treatments can really help when life happens

Why You Should Never Skip Patch Testing

I’ve had a lot of questions about patch testing in the last few weeks, so I thought I’d cover it in this month’s blog. I know that your clients will be desperate to get in and get their treatments done, but with treatments like lash lift or perm and lash/brow tinting, patch tests are crucial.

There is never any excuse for cutting corners when it comes to safety, especially now, when keeping ourselves and our clients safe is more important than ever. Here’s why you should never skip patch testing.

The potential risks are too big

Clients have waited months for their treatments so they might try to convince you that they don’t need a patch test especially if it means they have to wait at least another 48 hours, but skipping patch testing is really not worth it.

It can put the client’s health at risk if they have a serious allergic reaction to a product, and it opens you up to potentially being sued, fined, or losing your business. Also, how many people do you think a client will tell if they have a really bad allergic reaction and what effect will this have on your reputation?

Something else to think about is if you don’t patch test a client and they have a reaction, it can invalidate your insurance. You know you should have done a patch test and they can decide that you have been negligent and refuse to pay out any money. In this case, it will probably be more difficult and expensive to get the insurance cover you need.

Allergies can develop over time

You’ve probably had clients telling you that they don’t need a patch test as they had one elsewhere not so long ago. It doesn’t matter, they still have to get one done, because:

  • You could be using different products to the place where they got their last treatment.
  • Allergies can develop over time with repeated exposure to a product.
  • Allergic reactions can happen out of the blue, even when a client has never had a reaction to a product before.

Good practice for patch testing

For all treatments that require a patch test (check the manufacturer’s instructions on products if you’re not sure), make sure it’s clearly stated on any price lists and your website.

Make sure new clients are aware that they’ll need a patch test before any applicable treatment. If they try to convince you that they don’t need one, just explain to them that it’s for their safety and that it’s an important part of how you operate your business safely and maintain standards.

If you are afraid that clients will go elsewhere rather than get a patch test, let them. Clients should be running a mile from therapists who don’t patch test and it’s really not worth skipping them and risking your reputation and business.

How to Feel Less Anxious About Coming Out of Lockdown

After being in lockdown for what seems like forever, we’ve all dreamed of having some normality back, but now that the restrictions are easing and things are opening back up, you might be feeling a bit nervous as well. We all had to adjust to being in lockdown, and you might have even enjoyed having the chance to slow down a bit. Now we have to adjust to coming out of it, and it will take some doing.

Here’s how to feel less anxious about coming out of lockdown.

Know that you’re not alone in feeling anxious

If you’re nervous about what it’s going to be like getting back into normal life, you’re not alone. Even if you’ve been desperate to get back to work, see your friends, and go to the pub, part of you might still be cautious about what the weeks and months ahead might bring.

When things feel uncertain, think about what you can control

While there have been a lot of things that have been out of control during this pandemic, focusing on the things you can control can help reduce your anxiety.

You can wear gloves and a mask when you go out and about if you want. You can make sure you social distance from others. You can wash your hands often.

When you open your business again, you can put measures in place to protect yourself, your staff (if you have them), and your customers. All of these things are within your control. If you’re anxious about opening the doors to your business again, read our last blog for some helpful guidance.

Remember, you don’t have to rush back in

Even if your hair is desperate and you long for a few glasses of wine with the girls at the pub, you don’t have to rush into doing everything all at once if you’re feeling nervous. Start small. Invite a friend round for a drink in the garden if the weather’s being kind, then build up gradually from there.

Don’t let anyone pressure you to do things you’re not ready to do. Get back to the swing of things in your own time.

Take some time to think about your life

Maybe you’ve enjoyed the chance to slow down during lockdown and you’ve had more time to do things just for you. For a lot of people, myself included, lockdown has shown me how out of balance my life had been getting, and it allowed me to focus on things I really wanted to do with my life. Do you want to change careers or learn something new? It’s never too late to follow your dreams.

Talk to people

I mentioned earlier in the blog that you won’t be the only one who’s feeling anxious about post-lockdown life, so rather than getting all chewed up about things, why not talk to a good friend, workmate or family member about how you’re feeling? The chances are they’ll feel exactly the same and you’ll be able to share tips on how to cope and support each other.

Getting back to some sort of normal won’t be easy, but we’ll all adapt, because we always do. You’re always tougher than you think.

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Think About Your Hopes and Dreams

‘What now?’

Have you been asking yourself this question lately? We are living in such strange times. Our lives are upside down and we’re all having to adjust to a ‘new normal.’ We’re worried about our health, our loved ones, our businesses, our jobs, and the future.

There will come a time when things get back to some kind of normal, even if you can’t see it right now, and that’s why this is the perfect time to think about your hopes, dreams, and wishes for when that day comes, and beyond.

Most of us have had some time to slow down lately and reflect on what is really important to us and what we want for our lives. How do you want your future to look?

The coronavirus has been a traumatic experience

There’s no getting away from it, the speed at which the virus has disrupted our lives has been traumatic, but the thing about traumatic experiences is no matter how terrible they seem on the surface, they do remind us about what is really important, and they can help us grow and move on to better things.

What the coronavirus has shown us

What really matters

There’s nothing like a global pandemic to focus your attention on what is really important; your health, your family, and your friends. We have found that we can actually live without many of the other things we held to be so important.

How important our relationships are

Traumatic experiences like this make us appreciate the people in our lives more, from the sister or brother who calls you to check in and make sure you’re okay, to the friend who leaves a thoughtful gift on your doorstep.

That there’s more to life and the possibility of bigger and better things

Something as life-changing as the coronavirus might have made you re-evaluate your life direction. You might be thinking about a new career path, or learning new skills so you can do what you’ve always really wanted to do. It can be devastating to lose a job or not know if your business will survive, but sometimes, the path is cleared because something better is in the pipeline for you.

How resilient you really are

While you may not feel so resilient when you’re in your pyjamas hiding away from the world in front of Netflix, I promise you, you’ll get through this. How do I know this? Because you’ve got through 100% of your worst days so far and you’re still here.

That the small things really are the big things

How many things have you realised you take for granted since the start of all of this? Just being able to go for a walk. Being able to get what you want from the supermarket. Being able to see your family and friends. When life gets busy and we’re chasing the next big thing, we forget that it’s actually the small things that matter, and they are the most important things.

Are you thinking about the future?

Now is the time to ask yourself how you want your future to look. Do you want to build a business when this is over, or learn a new skill so that you can offer new treatments to your clients who will be desperate to get back through your doors?

How to Look After Your Mental Well-being During the Coronavirus Outbreak

The coronavirus has had a huge impact on our daily lives, and whether you’re young or old, employed or self-employed, you will have felt its effects. For many of us, it has caused anxiety around health and money, and now there are also a growing amount of restrictions on our daily lives.

There’s no doubt about it, the coronavirus and its impact is having an effect on many people’s mental health. The virus itself is an unknown enemy and what will happen, and how long this situation will go on for is uncertain; and it’s the fear of the unknown that’s driving our anxiety.

So how can you look after your mental wellbeing during the coronavirus outbreak?

Admit you’re anxious and express it-but don’t spiral

Given the situation, it’s completely normal to feel anxious. Express how you feel to other supportive people or write it down in a journal. But make sure you don’t get let yourself drawn into other people’s anxieties as this will only make you feel worse.

Limit how often you watch the news or check social media updates

If you’re constantly checking the news and social media for coronavirus updates, you’ll increase your anxiety and feelings of overwhelm. There’s nothing wrong with keeping yourself up to date with what’s going on, but stick to official sources like the government or the NHS.

A word on Facebook groups: There are a lot of Facebook groups popping up at the moment and the majority are all about people supporting each other which is so great to see. But watch out for those that are a constant stream of negativity, scaremongering, false information, or trolling. Everything you take in affects your mental health and overall anxiety levels, remember that.

Get moving

If you can’t work at the moment, your gym is shut, or your exercise class is cancelled for the foreseeable future, you might not be as active as you usually are. Staying active is crucial for your physical and mental health so make exercise a priority. The current guidelines from the government say that you are allowed outside to exercise once per day, as long as you maintain a sensible distance from others, so you can go for a walk, jog, or bike ride. But if you’d rather stay at home, or you’re self-isolating, there are plenty of great workouts on YouTube from yoga to Pilates, high-intensity workouts and much more.

Stay connected

If you can’t see friends or family at the moment, it can feel quite lonely and this can affect mental health. We are very lucky to have access to technology that makes staying connected easier. You can text, call, or video call your friends and family, and even get together for a virtual cuppa or glass of wine!

Keep to a routine

If your life is upside down at the minute, sticking to a routine will help you feel just a little bit in control of things. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time and make time for exercise, self-care, and work (if you are able to work and are working from home.)

Fill your time with meaningful things

If you’ve suddenly found yourself with a lot of time on your hands, instead of scrolling through your phone every few minutes, use the time to do something you’ve been meaning to do for a while. If you’re self-employed, learn something new related to your business or tweak your website, or if you just want anything non-coronavirus related to fill your time, why not clear out your wardrobe, read that book you’ve been meaning to read, or do a free online course?
