How to Diversify and Protect Your Beauty Business

The pandemic and lockdowns have been so hard on the beauty industry, and most of us have been unable to operate our businesses as usual for best part of a year.

But if I know anything about us therapists, it’s that we’re resourceful, and many beauty business owners actually found or thought about new opportunities during the pandemic.

Did you manage to diversify your business in the past year, or has the turbulence caused by the pandemic made you realise that you need to so you can protect your business in the future?

Here’s how to diversify and protect your beauty business.

Upskill

There’s no better time to add new services to your treatment menu. One, if you add great new treatments to what you already offer, you’ll stand out from your competitors, and two, some treatments are probably going to become extra popular when this is all over.

People have been stressed, anxious, and fearful for a long time and many people’s mental health will have suffered, so I think that treatments that focus on wellness will become more popular than ever. Think treatments like Reflexology and Indian Head Massage.

Check out our course page for inspiration.

Sell products

You might do this already, but it makes sense if you’ve found some products you really believe in and you want to help clients look after themselves in between appointments. At home beauty has become big business over the past year and this is probably going to continue for the foreseeable future.

Partner with other businesses

In times like these, small businesses should support each other, and as a beauty business owner it makes sense for you to find ways to pair up with another business that complements yours. So for beauty businesses, think health clubs and gyms, wedding businesses etc

If you sell products, ask if you can stock them in their premises in return for a fee or commission. Keep their flyers on the reception desk in your salon. Ask them to promote your business- advertising a bridal beauty wellness package in a bridal shop is a no-brainer!

Make the partnership a win-win for both of your businesses and you won’t regret it.

Why You Should Do a Job You Love

‘Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’ is what they say.

But how many people actually do a job they love? Probably not many.

I’m not saying that there’s something wrong with doing a job just because it puts food on the table, but if you spend your life dreading Mondays, watching the clock, and struggling to get going every day, you have to ask yourself about the real cost of not doing a job that you really enjoy.

Here’s why you should do a job you love.

You’ll feel satisfied and fulfilled

Even when you do a job you love, you can be exhausted at the end of the day, but you’ll be tired in a good way. You’ll have enjoyed what you were doing and you’ll have made a difference to someone. This is far better than watching the clock all day and counting the hours until you can go home.

You’ll be a happier person

Think about it this way, most people spend around half of their waking hours at work. If you spend this time doing something you hate, you can’t expect to feel happy. If you do a job you love, you’ll find that there’s just so much more meaning and purpose to life, and you’ll be happier knowing that you’re doing what you were always meant to do.

You’ll be motivated to keep on doing better

If you don’t care about your job, you won’t be motivated to do well. You’ll probably just do the minimum you can get away with, then go home, because you’ll get your pay cheque anyway, right?

If you love your job, you’ll feel a lot different. You’ll want to always push yourself, get more qualified, and do better.

You’ll find even the tough days easier to handle

There are ups and downs in any job, and even if you love what you do, there’ll still be days where things happen to challenge or annoy you. If you love your job, these storms are a lot easier to weather though than if you’re facing issues while you’re in a job you hate.

So what should you do if you don’t love your work?

My advice would be to take a step towards doing something you love, no matter how small. Anything you do will be better than just wishing that things were different.

Do you want to get more qualified so you can earn more and have more variety in your days?

Do you want to change careers completely?

Or what about being your own boss?

A career in beauty therapy can be very rewarding, and you can use your skills in many different settings from salons to cruise ships, or you can go mobile for ultimate flexibility with your working hours.

Browse our courses and see what takes your fancy. We have courses suitable for those who are completely new to the industry, or for experienced therapists wanting to advance their skills.

Why You Should Never Skip Patch Testing

patch test allergic reaction

I’ve had a lot of questions about patch testing in the last few weeks, so I thought I’d cover it in this month’s blog. I know that your clients will be desperate to get in and get their treatments done, but with treatments like lash lift or perm and lash/brow tinting, patch tests are crucial.

There is never any excuse for cutting corners when it comes to safety, especially now, when keeping ourselves and our clients safe is more important than ever. Here’s why you should never skip patch testing.

The potential risks are too big

Clients have waited months for their treatments so they might try to convince you that they don’t need a patch test especially if it means they have to wait at least another 48 hours, but skipping patch testing is really not worth it.

It can put the client’s health at risk if they have a serious allergic reaction to a product, and it opens you up to potentially being sued, fined, or losing your business. Also, how many people do you think a client will tell if they have a really bad allergic reaction and what effect will this have on your reputation?

Something else to think about is if you don’t patch test a client and they have a reaction, it can invalidate your insurance. You know you should have done a patch test and they can decide that you have been negligent and refuse to pay out any money. In this case, it will probably be more difficult and expensive to get the insurance cover you need.

Allergies can develop over time

You’ve probably had clients telling you that they don’t need a patch test as they had one elsewhere not so long ago. It doesn’t matter, they still have to get one done, because:

  • You could be using different products to the place where they got their last treatment.
  • Allergies can develop over time with repeated exposure to a product.
  • Allergic reactions can happen out of the blue, even when a client has never had a reaction to a product before.

Good practice for patch testing

For all treatments that require a patch test (check the manufacturer’s instructions on products if you’re not sure), make sure it’s clearly stated on any price lists and your website.

Make sure new clients are aware that they’ll need a patch test before any applicable treatment. If they try to convince you that they don’t need one, just explain to them that it’s for their safety and that it’s an important part of how you operate your business safely and maintain standards.

If you are afraid that clients will go elsewhere rather than get a patch test, let them. Clients should be running a mile from therapists who don’t patch test and it’s really not worth skipping them and risking your reputation and business.

How to Feel Less Anxious About Coming Out of Lockdown

open sign on shop, easing of lockdown

After being in lockdown for what seems like forever, we’ve all dreamed of having some normality back, but now that the restrictions are easing and things are opening back up, you might be feeling a bit nervous as well. We all had to adjust to being in lockdown, and you might have even enjoyed having the chance to slow down a bit. Now we have to adjust to coming out of it, and it will take some doing.

Here’s how to feel less anxious about coming out of lockdown.

Know that you’re not alone in feeling anxious

If you’re nervous about what it’s going to be like getting back into normal life, you’re not alone. Even if you’ve been desperate to get back to work, see your friends, and go to the pub, part of you might still be cautious about what the weeks and months ahead might bring.

When things feel uncertain, think about what you can control

While there have been a lot of things that have been out of control during this pandemic, focusing on the things you can control can help reduce your anxiety.

You can wear gloves and a mask when you go out and about if you want. You can make sure you social distance from others. You can wash your hands often.

When you open your business again, you can put measures in place to protect yourself, your staff (if you have them), and your customers. All of these things are within your control. If you’re anxious about opening the doors to your business again, read our last blog for some helpful guidance.

Remember, you don’t have to rush back in

Even if your hair is desperate and you long for a few glasses of wine with the girls at the pub, you don’t have to rush into doing everything all at once if you’re feeling nervous. Start small. Invite a friend round for a drink in the garden if the weather’s being kind, then build up gradually from there.

Don’t let anyone pressure you to do things you’re not ready to do. Get back to the swing of things in your own time.

Take some time to think about your life

Maybe you’ve enjoyed the chance to slow down during lockdown and you’ve had more time to do things just for you. For a lot of people, myself included, lockdown has shown me how out of balance my life had been getting, and it allowed me to focus on things I really wanted to do with my life. Do you want to change careers or learn something new? It’s never too late to follow your dreams.

Talk to people

I mentioned earlier in the blog that you won’t be the only one who’s feeling anxious about post-lockdown life, so rather than getting all chewed up about things, why not talk to a good friend, workmate or family member about how you’re feeling? The chances are they’ll feel exactly the same and you’ll be able to share tips on how to cope and support each other.

Getting back to some sort of normal won’t be easy, but we’ll all adapt, because we always do. You’re always tougher than you think.

Train with us…

All our courses are taught in small groups which makes for a relaxing learning environment where you’ll get all of the attention you need. Reopening Your Salon in a Post Covid-19 World

manicure therapist wearing PPE

If all goes according to the government plan, salons may be able to open again in July after months of being closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. There has so much uncertainty for our industry, and so much heartbreak for us and our clients at having to close our doors for what was the foreseeable future.

But as the time fast approaches when we might finally be able to get back to doing what we love, there are naturally going to be worries and concerns about reopening and how we will operate in a post-Covid 19 world.

The cost of reopening

Most of us have had no income for months so money is a worry, and there will inevitably be costs involved in reopening our businesses. There are going to be very strict regulations that we’ll have to abide by around PPE and hygiene, and meeting the standards is going to cost money.

As well as having to invest in PPE, we’ll also have to rethink how we book in appointments. We’ll have to leave longer in between clients so this will mean we won’t earn as much as we usually would if we were booked up back to back as we often are. This means we’ll have to be creative in thinking about how we will bring in income and cover costs.

You might panic and go into overdrive with offers to entice people back, but the fact is, the country and the industry is unlikely to be back to any kind of normal anytime soon, and you can’t slash prices forever.

You might have to raise prices initially

This can seem scary, but you have to factor in the cost of PPE and other measures you’re having to introduce like extra cleaning. You might even decide to charge the client the cost of the PPE that’s needed during their treatment.

Upsell products from treatments

Sales will be so important in our industry going forwards, and upselling products from treatments is a good way to help clients continue to get the benefits at home in-between treatments. Let’s face it, many people have turned to at-home treatments anyway during the lockdown so this will not be unusual for them.

However you decide to bring in some income, Please remember to charge your worth for your hard work, qualifications, and training. Make sure you value yourself just as you did before all of this happened. If nothing else, clients will have realised during this time just how valuable you really are!

Reopening your salon: Practical tips

It’s not going to be as easy as just carrying on as normal as long as you wear a mask and gloves. There’s a lot to think about including:

Are there any treatments you feel you can’t safely provide, like facials, for example?

You might want to rethink your menu of services for now so you can focus on those you can safely do in the time you have.

How will you book appointments in going forward?

First, think about whether you’ll reopen full-time or only on certain days each week. Then you’ll be able to decide how to deal with bookings.

  • Are you going to prioritise people who were already booked in but had their appointments cancelled due to the enforced closure?
  • How much time will you dedicate to each appointment? (minimum and maximum)
  • How much time will you need between appointments so you can clean, dispose of PPE, and meet the strict new hygiene standards?
  • How many clients will you allow in the salon at any one time (bearing in mind the need to social distance).
  • Will you ban walk-ins and cash payments? Both of these will make it harder to adhere to the new hygiene regulations.

How will you organise your staff?

If you employ staff, you’ll have to think about:

  • How many staff can be in the salon at any one time?
  • Will you need to stagger shifts or limit the days they are at work?

Communicating with clients

Whether it’s via your website, social media channels, or both, you’ll need to communicate with clients about how things are going to change in the salon when you reopen.

First, announce when you’ll be reopening, then:

  • Tell them about your new opening hours and how to book appointments.
  • Reassure them that there will be strict hygiene measures in place and what they need to do when they attend the salon.
  • Remind them that under no circumstances should they attend the salon if they are feeling unwell.
  • Finally, don’t forget to thank clients for their patience, understanding, and loyalty!

When we reopen, there might be teething problems as we all try to get to grips with the post-coronavirus world. But we all love what we do and we love our clients, and this is half of the battle.

I’d love you to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns about reopening, or you just want to get something off your chest. My door is always open.

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Think About Your Hopes and Dreams

mug with the words 'have a dream' written on it

‘What now?’

Have you been asking yourself this question lately? We are living in such strange times. Our lives are upside down and we’re all having to adjust to a ‘new normal.’ We’re worried about our health, our loved ones, our businesses, our jobs, and the future.

There will come a time when things get back to some kind of normal, even if you can’t see it right now, and that’s why this is the perfect time to think about your hopes, dreams, and wishes for when that day comes, and beyond.

Most of us have had some time to slow down lately and reflect on what is really important to us and what we want for our lives. How do you want your future to look?

Here’s why now is the perfect time to think about your hopes and dreams.

The coronavirus has been a traumatic experience

There’s no getting away from it, the speed at which the virus has disrupted our lives has been traumatic, but the thing about traumatic experiences is no matter how terrible they seem on the surface, they do remind us about what is really important, and they can help us grow and move on to better things.

What the coronavirus has shown us

What really matters

There’s nothing like a global pandemic to focus your attention on what is really important; your health, your family, and your friends. We have found that we can actually live without many of the other things we held to be so important.

How important our relationships are

Traumatic experiences like this make us appreciate the people in our lives more, from the sister or brother who calls you to check in and make sure you’re okay, to the friend who leaves a thoughtful gift on your doorstep.

That there’s more to life and the possibility of bigger and better things

Something as life-changing as the coronavirus might have made you re-evaluate your life direction. You might be thinking about a new career path, or learning new skills so you can do what you’ve always really wanted to do. It can be devastating to lose a job or not know if your business will survive, but sometimes, the path is cleared because something better is in the pipeline for you.

How resilient you really are

While you may not feel so resilient when you’re in your pyjamas hiding away from the world in front of Netflix, I promise you, you’ll get through this. How do I know this? Because you’ve got through 100% of your worst days so far and you’re still here.

That the small things really are the big things

How many things have you realised you take for granted since the start of all of this? Just being able to go for a walk. Being able to get what you want from the supermarket. Being able to see your family and friends. When life gets busy and we’re chasing the next big thing, we forget that it’s actually the small things that matter, and they are the most important things.

Are you thinking about the future?

Now is the time to ask yourself how you want your future to look. Do you want to build a business when this is over, or learn a new skill so that you can offer new treatments to your clients who will be desperate to get back through your doors?

Take some time out while everything is in this strange limbo to plan ahead and browse our courses. There is always a future. There is always hope.

How to Look After Your Mental Well-being During the Coronavirus Outbreak

Woman relaxing drinking cup of tea

The coronavirus has had a huge impact on our daily lives, and whether you’re young or old, employed or self-employed, you will have felt its effects. For many of us, it has caused anxiety around health and money, and now there are also a growing amount of restrictions on our daily lives.

There’s no doubt about it, the coronavirus and its impact is having an effect on many people’s mental health. The virus itself is an unknown enemy and what will happen, and how long this situation will go on for is uncertain; and it’s the fear of the unknown that’s driving our anxiety.

So how can you look after your mental wellbeing during the coronavirus outbreak?

Admit you’re anxious and express it-but don’t spiral

Given the situation, it’s completely normal to feel anxious. Express how you feel to other supportive people or write it down in a journal. But make sure you don’t get let yourself drawn into other people’s anxieties as this will only make you feel worse.

Limit how often you watch the news or check social media updates

If you’re constantly checking the news and social media for coronavirus updates, you’ll increase your anxiety and feelings of overwhelm. There’s nothing wrong with keeping yourself up to date with what’s going on, but stick to official sources like the government or the NHS.

A word on Facebook groups: There are a lot of Facebook groups popping up at the moment and the majority are all about people supporting each other which is so great to see. But watch out for those that are a constant stream of negativity, scaremongering, false information, or trolling. Everything you take in affects your mental health and overall anxiety levels, remember that.

Get moving

If you can’t work at the moment, your gym is shut, or your exercise class is cancelled for the foreseeable future, you might not be as active as you usually are. Staying active is crucial for your physical and mental health so make exercise a priority. The current guidelines from the government say that you are allowed outside to exercise once per day, as long as you maintain a sensible distance from others, so you can go for a walk, jog, or bike ride. But if you’d rather stay at home, or you’re self-isolating, there are plenty of great workouts on YouTube from yoga to Pilates, high-intensity workouts and much more.

Stay connected

If you can’t see friends or family at the moment, it can feel quite lonely and this can affect mental health. We are very lucky to have access to technology that makes staying connected easier. You can text, call, or video call your friends and family, and even get together for a virtual cuppa or glass of wine!

Keep to a routine

If your life is upside down at the minute, sticking to a routine will help you feel just a little bit in control of things. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time and make time for exercise, self-care, and work (if you are able to work and are working from home.)

Fill your time with meaningful things

If you’ve suddenly found yourself with a lot of time on your hands, instead of scrolling through your phone every few minutes, use the time to do something you’ve been meaning to do for a while. If you’re self-employed, learn something new related to your business or tweak your website, or if you just want anything non-coronavirus related to fill your time, why not clear out your wardrobe, read that book you’ve been meaning to read, or do a free online course?

I hope you’ve found these tips helpful. I’ll be sharing lots more on the Facebook page in the coming weeks. Until next time, keep calm and carry on as best you can.

Why Do Your Beauty Courses as a Bundle?

beauty courses package bundle

Many students who train with me complete a few beauty courses at a time. So what are the benefits of doing your courses as a bundle? Well there are quite a few and I want to talk about just some of them in this blog.

The benefits of doing your beauty courses as a bundle

It usually works out cheaper

Often I’ll run an offer where courses will be discounted if you sign up for more than one course at the time of booking. I always advertise our latest offers in my newsletter and on the Facebook page, so keep an eye out if you’re looking to book a course anytime soon.

You’ll be able to start earning sooner rather than later

If you get your qualifications under your belt quicker, it means that you can put your new skills to use a lot sooner and start earning money, whether as your own boss or working for someone else as a more skilled therapist.

It will give you more career options

The more skills you learn in one go, the more options you have. So if you did a bundle of say a spray tanning course and a nail course, it gives you more options (maybe you want to go mobile?), it makes you more attractive to employers, and you’ll have a higher earning potential.

You can mix and match according to your needs

Is there a treatment you desperately want to add to your treatment menu or something that your employer wants to bring into their salon? By booking a bundle of courses, you can select the exact training that meets you/your employer’s needs.

Flexibility

Here at the academy, we pride ourselves on offering flexible training, and we know how busy life can get. So rather than booking one course then taking a year to do another because you simply don’t have the time, why not book a bundle and complete your qualifications quickly and easily when you know you have the time?

Consistency

When you train with us, you can expect high-quality training, small classes, and our undivided attention. Doing a bundle of courses with us keeps things consistent with the quality of your training. You probably know that the quality of training varies widely between different training providers, so why risk going out and working with clients feeling unprepared? If an employer takes you on, they can rest assured that your training will more than meet the required standards.

Personalised training that recognises your prior achievements

We tailor all of our courses to the individual, so if you’re completely new to the industry, your training will reflect that, and we won’t try to hurry you everything just to get your qualification. If you are a beginner, you can choose a bundle of courses that will be a nice introduction to the industry and get you up and running as a therapist.

If you’re an experienced therapist, your training will recognise your prior achievements, so we’ll refresh the basics, but not hold you back. You can choose a bundle of slightly more specialist courses to take your career and skills to the next level.

Train with us…

All our courses are taught in small groups which makes for a relaxing learning environment where you’ll get all of the attention you need. Steph, our academy director and trainer, has over 20 years’ experience in the industry so when you book a course with us, you’ll be perfectly prepared to be the most successful therapist that you can be.

Set Your Beauty Career Goals for 2020

Set your beauty career goals for 2020

It’s that time of year again, where you might be reflecting on what you’ve achieved this year and thinking about what you want to do next year. If you’re one of those people who start the year with great intentions that soon run out of steam, don’t be too hard on yourself. The good news is that a new year is the perfect chance for a fresh start, and what better excuse for a new start than 2020; the beginning of a new decade!

Set your beauty career goals for 2020

Invest in yourself and your career

Think about where you want to be this time next year, and go from there!

Do you want to get more qualified?

Are you already a therapist who wants to add more services to your treatment menu? Our courses are perfect for everyone from therapists who are new to the industry to seasoned professionals.

Do you want to become your own boss?

Many people dream of being their own boss, and having the freedom to choose your hours and your direction. It’s not all plain sailing, but if you’re prepared to work hard, you can really reap the rewards.

If you want to set up your own business, we have the course for you, from our Six Day Beauty Specialist Diploma, to our Mobile Beauty Therapist certificate, Spray Tanning training, and more, we’ve got everything you need to get started.

Do you want to change careers?

If your daily grind just isn’t doing it for you anymore, but you like the idea of making clients feel amazing, a career in beauty might be just up your street. Here at the academy, we have courses that are suitable for absolute beginners, so don’t worry if you don’t know your orange stick from your emery board; you soon will!

Decide how you’ll get there (and write it down!)

You’re more likely to achieve your goals if you make a plan. So if you want to get more qualified, what will you do? Will you make a list of courses you want to do and start researching training providers?

If you want to start your own business, will you speak to an advisor or someone who already has their own beauty business?

If you want to change careers, are you going to research what it’s like to work in the beauty industry, what you can expect to earn, and how long it will take to get qualified?

Be smart and start small

Your dreams don’t have to be small, but you’re more likely to be successful if you set small goals to get you where you want to be. Rather than giving yourself too much to do then beating yourself up if you don’t manage it, do one thing every day, or every week, that gets you a little bit closer to where you want to be.

Look after yourself and learn what truly makes you happy

This is not strictly a career goal, but it should be a life goal. No matter whether you’re employed or self-employed, you’ll never live your best life if you don’t take the time to look after yourself and to find out what makes you truly happy. Make time to do the things you love, or to simply do nothing. And whatever you’re doing, the first question you should ask yourself is ‘does this make me happy?’

Let us help you reach your 2020 goals!

Train with us…

Why You Should Always Follow Your Dreams

learner success story

If you follow us on social media you will have seen that we shared one of the academy’s success stories recently.

One of my lovely former students recently started her own business after completing a full beauty therapist course (while on maternity leave!) followed by spray tan and lash lift training. She is now the proud owner of J.R.D Home Beauty in Amble, and she is finally doing her dream job.

Lots of people go to work on a Monday and dream about what they would be doing if they had the chance. But there’s a difference between dreaming and doing.

What’s stopping you?

Maybe you’re afraid to leave a steady wage, maybe life and your responsibilities got in the way, I get it. But if you don’t try, you’ll never know what kind of life you could be living.

Here’s why you should put your fears aside and follow your dreams…

They motivate you

Dreams get you up in the morning, get you through the tough days, and give you purpose.

You’ll attract your tribe

You know the saying, your vibe attracts your tribe, and this is definitely true when it comes to people who have goals and dreams that they want to pursue. Your passion will rub off on other people and you’ll motivate each other to succeed.

You’ll inspire other people

I love inspiring people to further their beauty careers or to become their own boss, just as many people have inspired me over the years. You might not think it, but you could inspire someone to change careers or be their own boss too.

Life is too short to do a job you hate

We spend a lot of time at work, and there’s nothing worse than spending precious days counting down the hours until you can go home. Why not do something that inspires you and that allows you to make a difference to people? Imagine being excited to go to work every day!

Life is too short to not be happy

When you’re doing something you love, it doesn’t even feel like work because you’re in a kind of flow. The time flies by, and you feel happy. If this feeling isn’t familiar, ask yourself whether what you’re doing is really making you happy. If it’s not, make some changes.

It just might prove people wrong

How many times have you been told by people around you that ‘that’ll never work’ or ‘you’ll never be able to do this or that’? Well when you decide to pursue your goals and dreams, you’ll have the added satisfaction of proving them wrong.

You’ll make yourself proud

Other people might be proud of what you achieve, but more importantly, you’ll make yourself proud. Not everyone has the drive, ambition, confidence, and resilience to go after what they want.

So take my advice. Dream big and never stop working for what you want. You won’t regret it.

Will you be our next success story?
