Before you know it, what you thought you wanted leaves your life. This can often happen with your work or career. It can seem scary, especially if it’s something you’ve set your heart on, or something you’ve worked hard for. But believe me when I say, when things leave your life, it’s because something better is waiting in the wings to replace them.

What’s often needed when it comes to living the life you want is taking a step out of your comfort zone. This can often look like:

  • Leaving a stable job and income to go it alone;
  • Daring to break from the crowd and doing something you believe in;
  • Letting go of things that just aren’t working, even if it’s painful or scary to do so.

This involves making some brave and tough decisions, and plenty of people will have something to say about it. But at the end of the day, if you know you’re being true to yourself, that’s all you need to know.

You’ve probably heard it said that the magic happens outside of your comfort zone, and it really does. It’s not easy leaving what you’re comfortable with, but the thing is, you won’t grow if you don’t.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone can mean the difference between living your dream life and a life where you’re left wondering ‘what if?’ But how do you leave the fear behind?

You’ll find it easier to adapt to challenges and changes

If the past year and a bit has taught us anything it’s that life can often throw us a complete curveball when we are happily bobbing along. If you step out of your comfort zone regularly, you’ll find that you won’t be so thrown when challenges and changes do happen.

You’ll have more confidence in yourself

Have you ever done something that’s scared you to death but made you feel so good afterwards? You feel good because doing something you thought you couldn’t makes you feel more confident in yourself.

Your life will feel so much richer

Trying new things and breaking out of your comfort zone helps you experience new things and learn a lot about yourself. We all impose boundaries and restrictions on ourselves which keep us small. Pushing beyond them helps us feel free and makes our lives so much richer.

How to step out of your comfort zone

Write down a list of things you want to do

Whether it’s starting your own beauty business or training in a new treatment, write a list of things you want to do. Then break each thing down into small steps-how can you make them happen?

Do the thing you’ve been putting off

This is the scary bit; it might be handing in your notice and actually telling people you’re going to be starting your own business. It could be that you want to take your beauty business down a completely different path, but you aren’t sure how clients are going to react. Do that thing that’s been buzzing around in your head for a while now. I guarantee you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted once you’ve actually made a decision.

Get some inspiration

When you feel scared or stuck, a great way to feel less fearful is to read some inspirational books or blogs, or listen to some podcasts by people who have stepped out of their comfort zone. If you want to start your own business, read something by an amazing female entrepreneur. If you want to feel inspired, read or listen to something by someone who has succeeded against the odds.

It all starts with one tiny step outside your comfort zone. I promise you won’t regret it.

Which Beauty Course Should I Invest in?

Has the pandemic made you think that you want to change careers completely? With more of a focus on wellbeing and people wanting to de-stress after such a tough year, it’s a great time to get into the beauty industry.

Or maybe you’re already in the industry but you’ve noticed that clients are demanding different treatments now so you need to upskill.

It can be confusing deciding which treatments to train in, so I’ve put together some food for thought.

Here’s my guide to which beauty course you should invest in.

Pick something you’re passionate about

Do you care about your clients’ wellbeing and want to help them relax? It might be a good idea to go down the holistic treatments route when you’re thinking about which beauty course you should invest in. Look for a course that matches your passion with your values.

Think about how you want to train

When you’re deciding on which beauty course you want to do and which provider to choose, is flexibility important to you? Do you need training that fits around your family and other commitments? Here at the Academy, we always aim to be flexible with training days and dates because we know that people have such busy lives.

Look at other beauty businesses in your area

If there are a lot of nail technicians in your local area, it makes sense that you might want to avoid specialising in nails. Look at what your actual/potential competitors are doing-what beauty course could you invest in that would set you apart?

Think about a course that trains you in multiple treatments

Consider going mobile

Some clients will be itching to get back in the salon, but some will be fearful, even with Covid-safe measures in place. Think about going back to basics

One thing about the lockdown was that clients went back to basics; they started looking after their skin because they were wearing less makeup and rather than rely on nail extensions, they started looking after their nails at home. That’s not to say they won’t ever want extensions again, but it wouldn’t hurt to go back to basics with the course you train in and the treatments you offer. Think offering facial treatments and teaching clients how to look after their skin, and offering gel polish or manicures with products that promote healthy strong natural nail growth.

How to Go into 2021 Feeling More Positive

Instead of making the usual New Year’s Resolutions this year, why not learn from the lessons of 2020 and make a promise to yourself to focus on what’s positive, important, and empowering in 2021?

The event of 2020 brought a lot of changes, some good, some not so good. But for me personally, it’s helped me think about what’s really important in my life and what I need to focus on.

Here’s how to go into 2021 feeling more positive.  

What do you want 2021 to look like?

A lot of things felt out of our control in 2020, but 2021 is your chance to focus on what you can control and what you want your future to look like. What are your main priorities? How will you live more by your values? How will you live a more authentic life, that makes YOU happy?

Let go of what is keeping you trapped

All of us have the potential to have an amazing life, but sometimes there are things that are keeping us stuck. This can be things we are very conscious of like having too many responsibilities or toxic relationships, or they can be unconscious, like negative beliefs or thoughts we have about ourselves. Make 2021 the year that you finally let go of what is keeping you trapped.

Take steps towards your dreams

Even if you feel like the world has stopped turning, it hasn’t, and it’s more important now than ever to pursue your dreams. Do you want to start a beauty career or get more qualified so you can offer more services to your clients? There’s nothing stopping you!

Have a plan

I remember having a plan for 2020 and it all went up in flames, but actually, things usually work out how they are supposed to. You can’t plan for every eventuality, but you can have a think about your beauty business goals for next year, what might make you life easier, and how you can feel better and more positive in 2021. Do you struggle with social media? Get some help. Do you want to offer clients more services? Book a course. Do you struggle with overwhelm? Promise that you’ll spend more time on self-care. Every baby step you take could make a huge difference to 2021 and beyond.

Make a promise to overhaul your life

If 2020 has shown us anything, it’s what we need more of in our lives and what we don’t need. Think about what doesn’t enhance your life and be ready to let it go.

Are there people who don’t support you and your dreams?

Are there toxic people who don’t add to your life, but take away from it?

Are you being kept trapped by negative and unhelpful thoughts?

Do you spend all of your time at work wishing you had another job?

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Think About Your Hopes and Dreams

Have you been asking yourself this question lately? We are living in such strange times. Our lives are upside down and we’re all having to adjust to a ‘new normal.’ We’re worried about our health, our loved ones, our businesses, our jobs, and the future.

There will come a time when things get back to some kind of normal, even if you can’t see it right now, and that’s why this is the perfect time to think about your hopes, dreams, and wishes for when that day comes, and beyond.

Most of us have had some time to slow down lately and reflect on what is really important to us and what we want for our lives. How do you want your future to look?

There’s no getting away from it, the speed at which the virus has disrupted our lives has been traumatic, but the thing about traumatic experiences is no matter how terrible they seem on the surface, they do remind us about what is really important, and they can help us grow and move on to better things.

What really matters

There’s nothing like a global pandemic to focus your attention on what is really important; your health, your family, and your friends. We have found that we can actually live without many of the other things we held to be so important.

How important our relationships are

Traumatic experiences like this make us appreciate the people in our lives more, from the sister or brother who calls you to check in and make sure you’re okay, to the friend who leaves a thoughtful gift on your doorstep.

That there’s more to life and the possibility of bigger and better things

Something as life-changing as the coronavirus might have made you re-evaluate your life direction. You might be thinking about a new career path, or learning new skills so you can do what you’ve always really wanted to do. It can be devastating to lose a job or not know if your business will survive, but sometimes, the path is cleared because something better is in the pipeline for you.

How resilient you really are

While you may not feel so resilient when you’re in your pyjamas hiding away from the world in front of Netflix, I promise you, you’ll get through this. How do I know this? Because you’ve got through 100% of your worst days so far and you’re still here.

That the small things really are the big things

How many things have you realised you take for granted since the start of all of this? Just being able to go for a walk. Being able to get what you want from the supermarket. Being able to see your family and friends. When life gets busy and we’re chasing the next big thing, we forget that it’s actually the small things that matter, and they are the most important things.

Now is the time to ask yourself how you want your future to look. Do you want to build a business when this is over, or learn a new skill so that you can offer new treatments to your clients who will be desperate to get back through your doors?
