Why You Should Bring Reflexology into Your Beauty Business

reflexology-courses

Reflexology is one of the most in-demand holistic treatments in the industry, as more and more stressed out and run down clients look for something that’s relaxing, enhances their wellbeing, and promotes healing of the body.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology dates back thousands of years and has its roots in China and Ancient Egypt. It’s believed that energy channels run throughout the body, and if any of these channels become blocked, health problems can occur. Over time, practitioners of reflexology developed a map of pressure points in the hands and feet which are thought to be connected to different parts of the body.

What can reflexology help with?

Reflexology doesn’t claim to be able to cure health conditions, but there is research that says it can help with stress, anxiety, headaches, sinus problems, neck and back pain, digestive problems, PMS, insomnia, and more.

The benefits of bringing reflexology into your business

You can offer it in a salon or mobile

Whether you’re based in a salon or you’re a self-employed mobile therapist, you will be able to offer reflexology. All you need is a couch, towels, a blanket, products to cleanse your client’s feet, and the balm or oil you perform the treatment with.

Reflexology is a niche and can make you stand out from your competitors

While reflexology is a popular treatment, not every salon offers it so there’s scope for you to really target and attract particular client groups, for example, pregnant clients.

It’s ideal for encouraging repeat customers

For best results, clients usually need a course of reflexology treatments regardless of what the treatment is for, which means repeat bookings for you. The treatment is also so relaxing and often enhances wellbeing so much that clients want to keep coming in for maintenance treatments, even if their original symptoms have improved.

It’s personally and financially rewarding

It will be hugely rewarding for you as a therapist to see that you’re enhancing your client’s wellbeing, and you’ll also reap the financial rewards of being able to offer a more specialist treatment.

Our reflexology course

Our reflexology course is suitable for complete beginners and it will teach you the essential reflexology massage movements you can do on your clients to improve their wellbeing. After you’ve completed the course, you’ll have all the tools and knowledge you need to start working on clients. To find out more about our reflexology course, click here.

Why Keeping Your Beauty Therapy Skills Up to Date is So Important

Beauty therapy CPD

Beauty Therapy is an industry that’s constantly changing, just like any other field of work you could name. There are always new treatments, techniques, products, standards, and guidelines coming in, so it’s important to keep on top of what’s going on and keep your skills up to date.

Continuing professional development (CPD) helps you to stay at the top of your game as a therapist, opens up new opportunities, and it gives your clients the peace of mind that you’re competent and qualified to a high standard.

The benefits of CPD

Keeping your skills up to date and gaining new qualifications helps you:

  • Keep up to date with what’s going on in the industry
  • Maintain and add to the knowledge and skills you need to give your clients an excellent service
  • Find new opportunities to advance in your career
  • Stay motivated and interested in your job. There’s nothing worse than the same old, same old
  • Raise standards in the beauty industry

Our courses

So you know that keeping your skills up to date is important, but sometimes it’s hard to find a course that’s relevant and fits around your life. Sometimes it’s hard to find courses that actually prepare you for doing treatments on real life clients. This is where Essential Beauty Academy comes in.

We run courses to suit both beginners and seasoned therapists, and our courses will teach you the knowledge and skills that will kickstart your beauty career, or take it to the next level.

We care about every learner who walks through our door, and that’s why our courses are taught in small groups. Everyone gets the attention and help they need, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where there’s no pressure to get things done. If there’s something you just can’t quite get, I’ll help you until you’re comfortable with it.

But don’t just take my word for it

We’ve worked with countless learners who’ve gone on to get fantastic jobs, or who have started their own businesses.

One of our beauty therapy students

My lovely learner Anouska has been in the industry for over 19 years. She’s a self-employed mobile therapist and for quite a few years, she’s juggled running her business with being a single parent. She didn’t have the time or the money to do extra qualifications to take her business forward, until this year. I spoke to her about what a difference doing the extra qualifications has made to her business and this is what she said;

“ I decided that this year is my year, so I contacted Stephanie and booked some nails courses, followed by Hopi Ear Candling, and a Lash Lift course. I’m so happy with what I’ve done so far. Stephanie has made me feel so positive and confident in what I’m doing. The atmosphere is so relaxed and my models have loved it. I definitely recommend the academy for all of your training needs.”

Why Training in Niche Treatments is Great for Your Beauty Career

oncology massage

If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you’ll have seen that we recently ran our first Oncology Massage course. We had a gorgeous day training therapists just like you to be able to do massage treatments on people with cancer.

Aside from being hugely rewarding, training in niche treatments like these is great for your beauty therapy career. Here’s why;

Having a niche puts you ahead of your competitors

It used to be that word of mouth was all that was needed to get custom for salons and mobile therapists, and while that’s still important, if people want to find a therapist who does something in particular, they often go to Google.

How do you stand out among the countless other salons and therapists who offer a similar treatment menu based around massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials? The answer is you offer a niche service- something specialised that they won’t easily be able to find elsewhere.

Instead of trying to offer all things to all people, offer something that meets the needs of a very specific group of people.

You’ll build a great reputation

When you offer niche treatments, the specific customers you’re targeting will always come back to you because they’ll see you as a specialist. Going back to Oncology Massage, who will someone who has cancer visit for a relaxing therapeutic treatment- you with the specialist skills who is aware of contraindications and massage techniques for people with cancer, or a generic therapist who will probably who will probably have to turn them away for insurance reasons?

It’s amazing for personal development

If you train in a niche, you’ll learn about a specific treatment in-depth, and you can even go onto specialise further once you’re qualified. Imagine being able to market yourself as the go to person in your area for Oncology Massage, or another specialist treatment?

It helps you focus your marketing

When you have a niche, you’re aiming your services at a very specific group of people, so it’s far easier to target them with your marketing than just marketing to everyone and hoping for the best.

You’ll be easier to find online

If you offer your customers a niche treatment, you’ll be far easier to find on Google than if you only offer generic treatments. Type your area followed by ‘massage’ into Google and see how many results come up. I bet there’s a lot. Now type in your area plus ‘Oncology Massage’ and I’m betting there won’t be half as many (if any at all). Imagine if your business came top of the search results for a particular treatment your area and what that would mean for your profits.

It will open doors

Having a niche qualification could open up a lot of opportunities for you and take your career in a completely different direction from what you expected. Imagine being excited going to work every day, and not knowing what each day will bring. A niche qualification might help you discover a new passion and reawaken your enthusiasm if you feel like you’ve just been trundling along.

Oncology Massage Has Arrived at the Academy!

Oncology massage

Cancer patients go through so much when they’re battling their illness. As well as the emotional effects of being diagnosed, they have to deal with the horrible physical side effects of cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. That’s why it’s so important that they have the chance to feel good about themselves, and find something that will comfort them during the tough times.

Massage is a wonderfully relaxing treatment, and even though studies have found that it reduces symptoms like pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue in cancer patients, those of us in the industry have had to turn them away. Insurance providers haven’t been willing to take the risk that clients might be harmed or that massage would somehow make the cancer worse.

The benefits of massage for cancer patients

Massage is actually very beneficial for people suffering from cancer. It can:

  • relax the mind and body
  • relieve tension
  • improve the flow of lymph, which is the fluid in the lymphatic system (part of the immune system)
  • improve mood

What type of massage is suitable for cancer patients?

Most doctors would advise a patient to have a gentle massage rather than a deep tissue treatment, that avoids the area surrounding a tumour or any affected lymph nodes. Some patients worry that massage will cause their cancer to spread, but studies have not found any evidence of this.

What should therapists be aware of?

When working with people with cancer, it’s important to avoid massaging:

  • any areas that are bruised or sensitive
  • areas that are being treated with radiotherapy. This rule applies during treatment and for a few weeks after
  • areas around IV lines or pain relief patches
  • areas affected by blood clots, varicose veins, or bad circulation

NB: It’s particularly important that patients who bleed or bruise easily, or who have cancer that’s spread to their bones, speak to their doctor before having massage treatments.

Would you like to work with cancer patients?

Are YOU ready to make a difference to cancer patients’ lives and add a cutting edge massage to your treatment menu and business?

If you follow our Facebook page, you might have seen that I was recently in Glasgow, completing my Oncology Massage training so I can start training therapists to work with clients who have cancer. I’m very passionate about these types of treatments, as I lost my beautiful mother to cancer and I know how important it is to be able to give someone a bit of comfort and serenity during such a difficult time.

What are the benefits of offering Oncology Massage treatments to clients?

By qualifying in Oncology Massage, you’ll stand out from your competitors, and you’ll be able to offer clients with cancer a gorgeous nourishing massage.

What does the course cover?

You’ll learn about types of cancer, cancer treatments, and how to safely use oncology massage techniques on cancer patients.

How long is the course?

It’s run over two days. You’ll attend our training day for the practical training, then you’ll complete written assignments to check your understanding of the theory. After you’ve submitted your assignments, you’ll have to complete a practical case study then attend for a final assessment around six weeks later to qualify.

Is the course accredited?

Yes. It’s accredited by Think Tree Hub which allows you to gain insurance to do the massage, so you’re completely covered to work safely with clients with cancer.

When is the next available course?

Our first training date for Oncology Massage is Tuesday 9th July. The course runs from 10am-4.30pm.

How much does it cost?

The course investment is £275. If you do voluntary work with cancer patients, you can train for the special reduced price of £180* This is a bargain price for an absolutely amazing qualification.

*If you want to take advantage of the special price, you’ll need to show us proof that you volunteer, such as a letter or email from the organisation.

Are there any entry requirements?

You must have a level 3 Body Massage qualification to attend this course.

How can I book?

To book your place, contact me on 07825337342. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have. Be quick though, as spaces are limited. We only teach in small groups so you get the best out of your training.

Building Customer Loyalty for Your Business

building customer loyalty for your business

Think about the hairdresser you go to, or your favourite pub or restaurant. What do you love about them and what makes you go back time and time again? The answer is probably because they do a great job and you’ve had some lovely experiences so you trust them. And with trust comes loyalty.

Once you go somewhere and experience excellent service, you’re more likely to go back, and this is exactly why building customer loyalty is so important for your beauty business.

Loyal customers will come back again and again, which means more business and the chance to build an excellent reputation.

How you can build customer loyalty

Make your services personal

If you’re doing a client consultation, it should always be personalised, not ‘one-size-fits-all.’ Once they see that you’ve given them information and advice that’s tailored to their needs, you’ll gain their trust and they’ll keep coming back to you.

Encourage them to make regular bookings

Many treatments you offer will need maintenance, like lash infills or waxing, so when a customer is paying, say ‘shall I book you in again in six weeks?’ This will encourage them to book in with you again there and then. A full diary is the best kind!

Have regular special offers

Good offers will both make customers come back and fill up some spaces in your diary at quieter times of the year. Rather than just offering a discount on a single treatment, why don’t you offer money off when a customer books two treatments together, like a massage and a facial? This encourages customers to book more treatments which they’ll potentially have again in the future.

Introduce a loyalty scheme

If you don’t have a loyalty scheme yet, you’re missing a trick. Loads of retailers use them to keep customers coming back, and so should you. Offer free treatments or discounts after a certain number of visits as an incentive for your customers to come back for more treatments.

So there are plenty of things you can do to look after the customers you’ve already got, rather than having to constantly chase new ones who might not be so loyal.

Speaking of loyalty…

Here at the academy, we’re all about loyalty too, and when you train with us, you’ll get a loyalty discount on your future course bookings and you can get as much as 15% off courses! Our loyalty card is being rolled out now, so why not get in touch and see what you can save on your next course?

5 Top Skincare Tips for Autumn

autumn skincare tips

After what feels like months of sweating and sitting in the sun, it’s time to think about how you’re going to look after your skin as the colder weather approaches. The skin needs to recover from sun exposure and prepare for the colder months ahead, when biting winds and central heating can really dry it out.

It’s a good idea to make a few tweaks to your skincare routine to keep your skin happy and healthy through the autumn and beyond. Here are our 5 top skincare tips for autumn.

Exfoliate

This helps remove the build-up of dead skin cells that come from the after affects of the summer and the cooler temperatures. Exfoliating at least twice per week will make your skin look radiant and glowing instead of dull and dehydrated. You’ll find that it will help prepare your skin for your other products too. Consider microdermabrasion for a deep exfoliation.

Consider changing your cleanser

In summer, a foaming or gel cleanser might feel better on the skin for washing away sweat, oil, and grime, but in the colder months, if your skin tends to get dry, you should switch to a cream or lotion-based cleanser. These are gentler on the skin and also help lock in moisture.

Think about using a serum

Serums are made up of smaller molecules than moisturisers so they can get deeper into the skin than moisturisers. Add a serum into your autumn skincare routine to nourish and hydrate the skin. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and Retinol.

Use a richer moisturiser

In the summer, a lighter moisturiser will do, but to combat dryness caused by harsh weather and central heating, you’ll need a richer moisturiser.

Don’t forget the hand cream

Wear gloves whenever you’re outside in the cold, and always use a rich hand cream to avoid your hands getting sore and chapped.

Remember you still need to wear sunscreen

Yes, even when it’s colder, the sun’s rays can be quite strong and they can still cause skin damage, so make sure you wear sunscreen all year round.

Train with us

As a therapist, your clients will always be asking for your advice, whether it’s about skincare, nails, or waxing, so why not train with us so you’re equipped to tell them everything they need to know?

All our courses are taught in small groups which makes for a relaxing learning environment where you’ll get all of the attention you need.
